Today, November 23rd, would have been Carl's 57th birthday.  We were good friends starting in Miss Ross' 2nd grade class at Central School (Glencoe).  After many years of not being in touch after high school, Carl and I (and our wives) reconnected in 2004.

I remember Carl getting in trouble, especially in 6th grade, because he would leap - LEAP - out of his chair shouting "Ooh, ooh I know, I know!" when any of our teachers asked a question.  Because he DID know.  Carl was the smartest kid I knew.  After he graduated from Yale he applied to medical school and was accepted by, among others, five Ivy League med schools, out of which, he chose Columbia where he continued to focus on ophthamology.  While still a med student, Carl invented what is now the most commonly used medication for glaucoma.

He was the chief of ophthamology at the University of Nebraska med school at the time of his death (4/14/09) and was a world renowned expert in glaucoma.

One could go on and on about Carl's professional achievements (just try googling his name!) but what really set him apart was his kindness.  Carl was loved by his parents and siblings, his patients, his colleagues and his friends.  He is loved and missed by his wonderful wife, Nancy, and his two beautiful and brilliant daughters, Melanie and Lucinda.
